Closet Organization – Tips for a Smooth Fall & Winter Wardrobe Switch

Oct 10, 2025

Does your closet feel overwhelming… packed with clothes you never wear, shoes scattered everywhere, and a shelf that’s turned into a dumping ground? You’re not alone.

Thankfully, with a few simple strategies, you can turn your closet into a space that feels organized, intentional, and easy to maintain 🙌🏼

Step 1: Empty It Out

Yes, you read that right 🙃… take it all out! But don’t panic, you don’t have to tackle the whole closet at once. Work in sections, using your bed and floor space to sort clothing into categories (ie. pants, long sleeves, jackets, workout clothes, etc.).

Step 2: Decision Time!

Now that everything’s sorted, it’s time to decide: Keep, Donate, or Toss.

Ask yourself these questions for each item:

  • Have you worn it in the last 12 months?

  • Does it fit?

  • Is it damaged… and will you realistically fix it?

  • Do you feel confident in it?

If the answer is “no” more than once, it’s time to let it go.

💡 Pro Tip: If you struggle with sentimental items, create a bin or basket specifically for them. When it’s full, it’s time to reevaluate before adding more.

Step 3: Organize… Don’t Forget The Label!

When putting items back, think about flow:

  • Keep your most-worn items in prime, easy-to-reach spots

  • Group like clothes together (all jeans, dresses, or sweaters). Sort by color if you want to be an overachiever!

  • Use bins or baskets with labels for accessories, off-season clothes, or smaller items

    Step 4: Maximize Space

If your closet feels cramped, try these space-saving hacks:

    • Maximize vertical space: Use lidded bins on the top shelf for off-season clothes

    • Add another hanging rod: Double your hanging space instantly for under $15

    • Use the door: Hang organizers for shoes, hats, purses, or jewelry

    • Add hooks: Great for “limbo clothes”—items you wore once but aren’t ready to wash

      Step 5: Maintain

Consistency is key! Try these easy tricks to keep your closet from overflowing again:

      • Keep a donate bin in your closet—when it’s full, drop it off
      • Try the hanger trick: Turn hangers backward at the start of a season. When you wear an item, flip it back. At the end of the season, you’ll know exactly what you never touched.

        ✨ Donate With A Purpose

Sometimes it’s easier to let go when you know your clothes are helping others. Consider these donation options:

        • Operation Breakthrough: Gently used kids’ clothes and shoes

        • Clothed with Dignity: Women’s clothing, jewelry, and shoes for single moms

        • Soles 4 Souls: Shoe donations that help the planet and people in need

        • Newhouse: Clothing for survivors of domestic abuse
